It was the beginning of the 80s and, in cinemas, after the Saturday night fever the alien mania broke out.
During those years many movies were released that would have gone down in history; timeless cult like Alien and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Between haunted ships and tender creatures looking for a home on the phone, the box offices recorded “Martian” profits.
Meanwhile, in 1982, John Carpenter’s iconic film The Thing was released. At first frowned upon by an audience that, during the recession period, felt more accustomed to lighter titles, but later The Thing gradually rose to headlines as one of the best horror films in history. It must have been the claustrophobic and anxious setting of the base in Antarctica, or it must have been the actors, or the director or the screenplay: the fact is this title still echoes in our memory 40 years later.
Shape-shifting aliens and characters with anxieties and suspicions of who may have been infected, together with daring escape plans, these could not fail to be the perfect scenario for a board game. The Italian Pendragon Game Studio understood the enormous potential of this title and, thanks to a very successful Kickstarter campaign, The Thing – The Board Game was born.
It is a not particularly complex game: it is based on secret identity mechanics and about planning the escape, for the survivors (and also for The Thing!), from the base in Antarctica where the film is set. It is a perfect title if played by at least 4 players (there is also a version for fewer players, of course), or even an ideal occasion is an evening with friends, not necessarily with great gaming background.
A title of this type, not particularly long to be played as a filler or as an occasional game (the simplicity of the rules and the speed of the gameplay make it the answer to the question “we are many, we don’t have much time, what do we do? ”) requires a quick setup: on the other hand, you don’t want to keep a crowded table waiting while you navigate tokens, meeples, miniatures and cards, right? The exclusive kickstarter and the 6 boxes of the “All In pledge kickstarter” that add an entire expansion and premium components such as miniatures and chips, can only complicate things and bore the game setup on the table.
As expected, we couldn’t sit idle and so we invented our setupper for The Thing. All the components of the game, whether they are the retail edition or the six boxes of the kickstarter all in, are condensed, through trays designed to the millimeter, within the box of the base game and each slot of our boxes will save you precious minutes. We firmly believe that games like The Thing, which are quick, with engaging features and “should be extracted, like a colt, at the right time”, must have “instant setup times” so that it does not let the hype drop during preparation. And so it will be, with our setupper. A whole “All In Edition” in a single box would make the lid rise by about 1cm, but we thought about this too: our lifted base for The Thing, which replaces the base of the game box, will allow you to open and close the box without a single millimeter of elevation. An aesthetic, functional, and satisfying solution to lock The Thing away where it will no longer be able to escape!
Finally, our “all in setupper” is the bundle organizer + lifted base, our personal uncut version of this film of fear and organization.
Ready for the perfect evening, without unnecessary downtime and with a shape-shifting alien on your table? Here it is!
