The year was 2016 and an author still little known to the Euronerd public, Alexander Pfister, published a game with Eggertspiele destined to be an enormous success: Great Western Trail.

The Far West, with its saloons, its Gringos and the unforgiving desert, has always been one of the most fertile lands in which to cultivate film sagas, TV series and video games. From Spaghetti Westerns to Clint Eastwood, through Read Dead Redemption or Gun, the list would be endless (and what about masterpieces like Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight…).

Naturally, board game publishers did not miss this enormous opportunity, and gaming pearls such as Bang!, Colt Express and Western Legends were born among cacti and caravans, with undead contaminations like in Zombicide: Undead or Alive.

Everything is always very violent, with duels, shootings, outlaws against sheriffs and Indians. And who would have expected to find… Cows?

Combining a management system with the Far West was Pfister’s brilliant idea, and the great result of Great Western Trail is there for all to see. But since livestock farming is not the prerogative of the Far West alone, it was thought appropriate to start not only with a new edition of the game (Great Western Trail: 2nd Edition, of which we, of course, have our own organizer), but with a trilogy that takes us from the far West to the far South, with Great Western Trail: Argentina, to the ends of the world with the third chapter, Great Western Trail: New Zealand (which however has… sheep!).

The game rule of the North American progenitor has been readjusted in a few but salient details: you will no longer have to get to Kansas City, but from Buenos Aires to the European ports of Liverpool, Amsterdam andLe Havre (we didn’t want to put too much of a reference to Rosenberg here, did we?). And there will be the classic roles like train driver, builder and Cow Boy, but also the Granjeros with their endless wheat fields, which we will help to plow with our livestock in exchange of precious wheat.

New rules and a new flavor for a game that improves with each chapter. After a few games we can say without a shadow of a doubt that if you liked Great Western Trail 2nd Edition, the next step is to set foot in South America and tread the Pampas with your Estancieros, you certainly won’t regret it!

The only negative side is, as usual, the organization: despite a nice plastic tray, we will find ourselves having to distribute tons of tokens, meeples and cards to everyone, and without an ad hoc container solution it will be the usual pre-match “tedium”. And since ships don’t wait, and we at The Dicetroyers don’t either, here is our organizer for Great Western Trail: Argentina, with dedicated containers for each player, card holders and token holders, to carry your herds without sowing chaos along the way.

Because for the sequel of a masterpiece, you need to be ready to dominate the disorder. Vamonos adelante, siempre!
