Beauty isn’t in the eye of the beholder — beauty is what gets sorted and stored. Perhaps, after soaring high with Wingspan, and breathing fire with Wyrmspan, our hunger for knowledge of the real or imaginary world still hasn’t been satisfied. Thankfully, Stonemaier Games comes to our rescue by plunging us into the depths of the ocean — or more simply, into the sludgy banks of rivers.
If someone is asking, “but why?”, that someone has clearly never played a Span (yes, we call them that now). Basically, you get beautifully illustrated cards depicting birds (or swimmables… if that’s a word in this case), which you need to place strategically on your board. Naturally, a poorly placed card could ruin your entire game and make you regret ever encountering that creature — but along the way, you’ll learn from your mistakes and build aviaries (or aquariaries… okay, I’ll stop) worthy of the finest Victorian English zoo, or dungeons more haunted than the final boss lair in the D&D campaign you’ve been playing for the past 15 years.
There’s no single reason to play a Span — just a thousand more cards to play, a thousand more eggs to lay, a thousand more actions to take!
And that’s exactly why Finspan, the aquatic cousin of Wingspan and Wyrmspan, makes a splash in this possibly-too-dry 2025. “More of the same,” this charming title seems to shout — and we’re more than happy to accept this delightful Pulpo a la Gallega!
