Unspoiled nature: it’s very rare, nowadays, to come across territories not yet affected by human activity, and even rarer to be able to get lost in them, discovering our most ancestral side.
So, we engage in literary and cinematic transpositions that evoke endless territories where the visit of homo sapiens is more of a hindrance than anything else. Movies like “Into the Wild”, or books like “Little House on the Prairie”, lead us to experience emotions that, in our urban but also rural everyday life of the 21st century, we are hardly able to replicate.
Of course, not even board games can exempt us from the responsibility of taking us back to our roots. Titles such as Meadow, Photosynthesis or Evergreen have been so successful precisely for having brought us back to Mother Nature, to contemplate her wonders.
Cascadia, the 2021 title of Flatout Games, takes us to the homonymous immense region that includes part of Canada and the United States, an American northwest full of wild life and forests.
The gameplay is to build the best habitat for the species of this ecosystem; therefore, we must try to satisfy the needs of animals and plants, in order to be elected the best naturalistic architects.
Certainly, seen with a quick glance, this game seems like an abstract of placing tiles and little more, but the experience of reading the wonderful manual full of naturalistic references and descriptions, excellently localized in Italy by the friends of Little Rocket Games, and the experience of “setupping” this great little title do justice to the setting which, unexpectedly, feels so much.
There aren’t many pieces; it’s still a lightweight filler, but we at The Dicetroyers remain of our conviction: it doesn’t matter how small and fast a game is, if you waste time playing it, we must intervene.
In fact, counting and placing that myriad of hexagonal tiles, adapting their number to the players at the table, are one of those little big annoyances that we have tried to solve with our setupper for Cascadia, as well as, of course, organizing the other components too.
And we have also tried to lend a hand to the already strong theme of this title, creating a small forest on your gaming table, which will keep the ecosystem you create safe.
Lightweight titles also require lightweight organization, and we’re right here for that. Seeing is believing!
