Cherry blossoms, pagodas with disarming symmetry, Pikachu and manga: that maze of islands east of the Chinese coast offers us a new surprise every day. Perfectionists, polite, with manners that appear surprising to Western eyes. A culture that has always been fascinating.

Japan has been talked about for years in the nerd world, and for very good reasons: an obsessive devotion to one’s passions is one of the cornerstones of becoming a true fan or collector. And, on closer inspection, the Land of the Rising Sun has all the qualities needed to produce gems to be loved and collected.

When a new Japan-themed game is released, success is (usually) guaranteed. Devir knows this well: after Bitoku, set in enchanted forests with strange spirits, comes The White Castle. Here we are dealing with one of the cornerstones of feudal Japan: gaining fame and glory for your own clan, in the shadow of Himeji Castle, the White Castle itself.

A tight, short, and complex game. In just nine turns we must collect as many fame points as possible, sending warriors, gardeners, and courtiers to farm, fight, and serve the Emperor, paying close attention to triggering all possible combos in half an hour—or just a little more—of gameplay.

Of course, the tea ceremony could not be missing, and here comes Matcha, the expansion that adds the delicate Geishas, also to be carefully placed on the small yet great game board.

For a short game, organization is essential. If playing a game that lasts less than an hour requires more than half an hour for setup and teardown, the game isn’t worth the candle, no matter how beautiful it is.

And when chaos reigns, as it does in this game’s box, we at The Dicetroyers step in to bring order: our organizer for The White Castle and the Matcha expansion will bring harmony, with dedicated card and tile holders. All the components from the base game and expansion will fit comfortably in the base game box, while player boards and the main board will go into the expansion box. Everything will be neat and ready to hit the table in just a few minutes.

Japan awaits—let’s not be late!
