It just landed on my table. It’s there, in front of me. I look at it, I turn it, I enjoy the view before removing the plastic that will cancel out its virginal holiness of an uncut object in a gesture. I take off the transparent wrapping plastic and let my household atmospheric agents in; I think it’s the same violation as when a researcher removes the case from a very ancient fossil on display in the museum. I feel a bit sorry, but I HAVE to know what’s inside, how and why, even though I’ve already seen it in dozens of videos. But this is my movie, and I’m the director.
The lid is lifted, the die is cast, there is no turning back. I immediately remove manuals and die-cut, take the cards, remove the pieces, pack the cards; meanwhile the tactile experience takes possession of my soul and drags me into almost psychedelic sensations. I do not notice the boiling water, the cat meowing, the neighbor who walks on the other side of the wall. I’m in the impenetrable bubble of unboxing, and nothing can break it.
The experience, ahimè, ends when the last ziplock has been closed, when the lid returns to cover the inside of the box, which ends up on the shelf. The synapses quiet down, and the “horror vacui” takes over. And now, what do we do?
Let’s “Pimp”!
“Pimping” has become commonplace, even among non-nerds, and is synonymous with the psychedelic continuation of unboxing and the persistence of synaptic fibrillation. In other words, opening is not enough, we need to improve.
After the initial passion, we know, at a certain point reason must be put in charge. Because when a box turns into an episode of “Hoarding: Buried Alive”, or when simply, after opening a lid, the first thought is “you can do more, you deserve it”; a healthy maternal spirit arrives which tends to fix the disorder tidying up, cleaning up and, more generally, pampering its creatures.
We, here at The Dicetroyers, know all too well that the first thing to do when “the new baby” is having a tantrum is to reorganize. Setting rules. And give the right spaces at the right times. Make it playable, quickly, and smoothly.
This is a setupper: the joy diminishes without, the desire fades without and as soon as dead time takes over, chaos wedges itself between the loose meshes of enthusiasm.
When we contemplated the majesty of Cavern, the depth of Mage Knight Ultimate, the omnipotence of Gloomhaven, we posed problems, and found solutions. Pimping, for us, means only one thing: improving space, time, and fun. Premium pieces are not enough, they do not satisfy the infinite stretch goals enough, the endless expansions lengthen the broth and sometimes take away the flavor. Everything must be channeled into the stream of consciousness of optimization, everything must be placed where it should be, and must use the right time. To be contemplated, loved, and above all, played.
Pimping is good, “setupping” is better. Seeing is believing! Because we, unboxing after unboxing, believe in it more and more.
