If you think the United Kingdom is just rain, tea, and people with umbrellas, you’re missing a key element: the nerdiest festival in England, where the Queen (or at least someone dressed like her) might well challenge an orc to a game of Carcassonne. We’re talking, of course, about the UK Games Expo.

Every year, Birmingham becomes the Mecca of board games—and we’re not talking about the classic Monopoly dragged out at Christmas with half-distracted uncles and improvised rules. The UK Games Expo is where you go to see—and get your hands on—the best the gaming world has to offer: Eurogames that would make Einstein blush, miniatures more detailed than Avatar in 8K, and wargames so epic they require a logistics degree.

The event will take place from May 30th to June 1st 2025, in the colossal NEC, a venue that, for the occasion, transforms into a paradise for those who see dice not just as things to roll, but as lifelong companions.

In 2024, the UK Games Expo saw a record-breaking turnout with 39,306 unique visitors and a total of 65,281 entries over the three-day event, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. This growth led to a significant expansion, with nearly 700 exhibitors present—a 31% rise compared to 2023.

Between one demo and the next, you can try out new games, meet designers with more creativity than hours of sleep, and of course, raid the booths of publishers and artisans selling just about everything.

There’s also a very serious side: awards, panels, international tournaments… Among the key highlights of 2024 was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dungeons & Dragons, featuring special seminars and events. Over £18,000 was raised for charity through various initiatives, including role-playing sessions with guests like Luke Gygax and Steve Jackson. The Star Wars pavilion drew enthusiastic crowds with exclusive demos and a promo Grogu card. Lastly, the UK Games Expo Awards honored titles like Cangaceiros and Voidfall, named Best Strategy Game by the jury and the public, respectively.

In short, the UK Games Expo isn’t just a fair: it’s a gigantic shared gaming table where the only real rule is to have fun (and maybe not cheat too much). If you love games, you should check it out. And if you don’t, maybe it’s just because you haven’t played Brass: Birmingham in… Birmingham!
