My grandfather always said that whoever leaves the old road for the new, knows what he leaves behind but does not know what he will find. Sure, he did not publish board games, but the wisdom of this phrase, and of my grandfather, knows no bounds.
On the other hand, the gaming world also lives on novelties, with ever-changing themes or mechanics, or ever more astonishing illustrations and components. So, who is right?
Everyone, or maybe no one. When, back in 2019, Stonemaier published a game about ornithology mixed with bird watching called Wingspan, few poeple would have counted on its success. On paper, it was a medium-weight game, with a truly niche theme and mechanics that had already been seen and reviewed, a big commercial and marketing risk in short.
By chance, by luck, or perhaps more for a winning strategy, however, this nice compendium of birds in the form of a board game has accomplished an astounding success. Whether for the wonderful illustrations, or for the simple but adorable components (who wouldn’t like little eggs on the table? WHO?!), but above all for the solidity of the gameplay that, while reaching out to a wide audience ( still it remains one of my favorite games for introducing beardless Padawans to the sacred art of board gaming), also tickles the appetite of the most experienced thanks to always different games, limited dice chance, short times (except for the setup, but with our products for Wingspan this point is also solved) and engine building mechanics that “Germanophiles” love so much, Wingspan has become one of the timeless classics of modern board gaming, alongside sacred monsters like Puerto Rico, Castles of Burgundy or Carcassonne, in short.
Now that, after 3 expansions, this splendid game has done its job, the good Stegmaier certainly couldn’t leave this game without a worthy successor, right?
So, away with the birds and make way for… Dragons!
Wyrmspan is the successor to its (almost) ornithological namesake, but here we will have to dig caves, attract big, small, mean, playful dragons or, of course, whelps, and send intrepid explorers to visit our friendly reptile house. The eggs are there, hundreds of cards with fantastic illustrations too, worms and mice have been replaced by crystals and gold. In short, the good old Wingspan is all there in this draconic version, BUT…
But there are differences, indeed! The cave cards give more strategy, the number of actions is variable and becomes the main tactic of this title; then there are the guilds that give bonuses and points. In short, Stonemaier has placed another blockbuster, taking the old path and giving it even more splendor. It remains a medium-weight title, but with even deeper strategies than Wingspan, to the satisfaction of neophytes and experts, as it was for its predecessor.
The setup, of course, also suffers from the usual downtime. So take yourselves to safety with our Wyrmspan organizer! Not only you will have everything, absolutely everything, on the table well organized in a few seconds, but we have also thought about ergonomics: the closure of the dragon card deck holder, in fact, slides out and becomes a double layer board for the 3 dragon and cave cards, to play like a real pro.
Whether you are a bird lover or a dragon worshipper, the dish is served, well organized and ready to play. Spread your Wyrmspan wide!
