Voidfall is the kind of game that, when you bring it out, makes silence fall over the table.
Not out of respect.
Out of fear.
This aged boar of a game promises a space epic of decaying empires, hostile galaxies, and civilizations on the brink of collapse. All of that with three rulebooks (more than when you were studying for your Analysis 2 exam), packed into a box that weighs about as much as a small planet.
It’s a 4X, but without dice, without diplomacy, and without the classic excuse of “well, the roll went bad.”
Here, if you lose, it’s your fault. And you know it.
Every game is an internal struggle between “this move is brilliant” and “why didn’t I major in mathematics.” Icons are everywhere: some seem clear, others probably communicate directly with other dimensions.
Voidfall isn’t explained: it’s studied. Preferably with highlighters, sticky notes, and a hot drink within reach.
The satisfaction, though, is huge. When everything clicks, your brain is smoking and the empire thrives, you feel like a true galactic strategist—for about thirty seconds.
Then your opponent takes their turn and everything collapses.
Voidfall isn’t for everyone, but that small, elite circle that wants to play it properly can’t help but notice that, beyond the game’s endless complexity, the setup is no joke either: tokens everywhere, a myriad of cards, boards, mini-boards, resources, and markers, all thrown more or less at random into the monumental game box.
We at The Dicetroyers won’t be there while you’re trying to understand the rule on page 32 of the second manual, nor when you realize you’ve completely messed up your turn. But we will be there when it’s time to set up in under 10 minutes, while you’re dividing the various decks, and while you’re trying to make this monster fit on your table.
