While there are talkings about global warming, the fact that there are long hot summer and no more mid-seasons; we certainly cannot forget that it still snows every now and then, so we need well-lit radiators and maybe somewhere snowshoes are also a useful accessory.
And if we were not humans, but defenseless and very tender puppies who need care and careful planning in view of the harsh and ferocious winter, then the game is done: we have a very important mission to accomplish, and we will not back down when it’s about of putting socks and hats on gorgeous little woodland critters!
The trend of “tenderness” themed board games is now established and has its feet firmly planted in the videogame panorama: if before the wait for a new game of orcs, dragons or undead made everyone’s blood boil , now seeing a Marquise de Gattis by Root, the little artisan dragons by Flamecraft or the birds to protect by Wingspan come to life on a table fills the hearts of fans with sweet feelings.
But of course, after the graphics, there must be content; and Root becomes a battlefield to the death, Flamecraft a ruthless competition to see who will be the best in the village and Wingspan becomes a fierce challenge which is won by whoever grabs the best chicken. On the other hand, we are players and to satisfy our hunger for victory, squirrels and colour cranyons are not enough.
And this is how Creature Comforts arrives, with a successful kickstarter campaign, to set up our tables: in a small box there is a surprising eurogame that can be played on several levels, challenging and simple, with a “push your luck” mechanic based on the roll of the dice which, as every good Germanist loves, affects the planning just enough not to become frustrating. If you add truly captivating and well-made graphics of clans of sylvan little creatures who wage war on whoever grabs the most comfortable sock, the tastiest soup, or the prettiest desk, to solid, albeit not particularly original mechanics, success is assured, and well deserved.
When we open the game box, however, we find ourselves at “the usual” new impasse: how can a game of an hour and a half of gameplay have such a tedious setup? Resources of all kinds and types, cards in different shapes and decks to separate and a myriad of tokens to divide could divert attention from the beauty of this title, focusing, instead, on the setup problem.
The solution? Our Creature Comforts organizer of course! 14 different containers, with dedicated slots, to set up this game in two minutes at the most, without letting winter arrive before the first round of the game. Resource holders with slots for each type, separate deck holders with double shutter and deck lifter: say goodbye to scattering cards around the table! And, of course, housing for each breed.
