Some time ago I read an article which, among various statistics, said that every day 3 board games are published on Earth. Well, even without making legitimate calculations, it’s a number that left me flabbergasted.
Certainly, in a positive way, because it means that while we eat, sleep, work or play, there are hundreds of brains at work to make my collection of wonders ever richer.
But if I start thinking about having them all, the logical consequences could be a negative number in my bank account, the need for an industrial warehouse with a couple of forklifts for storage and, perhaps, a trip with no return to a psychiatric clinic.
Therefore, the need for a proper selection arises. And since we, at The Dicetroyers, pay attention not only to the game, but also mostly to its playability; then it necessarily comes that moment when the Jiminy Cricket screams at 100 decibels in our ears “Setupper! Done right! Right away!”.
This voice has never left our heads, and over the years it has enriched our catalog and our passion for board games. While we browse what we’ve created over the years, we want to share our greatest moments of playful organization. Here you are… The top five of the organization!
1- Gloomhaven
How could it miss the game that for more than 3 years has been on top of the Olympus of the playful panorama? Wonderful to play, but also disastrous to prepare and put back. A mammoth box with hundreds of pieces and a plastic tray that doesn’t do justice to our needs in the slightest. We got to work right after opening this Pandora’s box, and we did our best to undo the downtime. Within minutes, the gloomy world of Gloomhaven will be on your tables, guaranteed!
2- Nemesis
In a game where the prerogative is to make as little noise as possible not to wake up terrifying creatures from another planet, yelling “disaster!” once you open the box isn’t the right way to start. Nemesis is one of our favorite titles; it has accompanied us through a sea of evenings and if we think about the time we have saved to start it with our base game, expansion and Lockdown setuppers, we can perhaps compensate for the frustration for that time when we died badly, the ship exploded and we couldn’t escape. Those are satisfactions that you should feel.
3- Bitoku
It’s not quite the most mainstream title out there, but this eye candy had us on the edge of our seats as we battled to become the new Spirit Guide. However, the amount of things inside the box is surprising, and we wanted to do the honor to this wonderful title creating a setupper, which allows you to place practically everything directly on the game board. And since it filled our box, we no longer have to ask ourselves uncomfortable questions like “Do you have a slightly less annoying game to play? We only have a couple of hours!”, because in a couple of minutes it gets ready, and you can play for hours, and puts himself back together switfly.
4- Root
Counting the races of the complete edition, between the base and the thousand expansions of this adventure in the woods, is challenging. As well as being able to start in human times and finding everything in a short time. Between moles, mice, cats, lizards and the rest of the zoo from the battle in the woods, moments of discomfort can be reached by removing only what is necessary and only from the base game box. It is unfortunately so for many games with so many add-ons. We rolled up our sleeves and designed a setupper that encloses everything in a box, with a tray for each breed, to enjoy every single part of this big game, in a very, very short time. And it was truly wonderful.
5- Cascadia
And now those gamers who know this game will say “but what is an organizer for a game that has so few pieces?!”. The answer to such questions is certainly not hidden on the surface, but in the depths of the “spatio-temporal” relationships of the board game. Cascadia is a small and short game. And you have to count when you plank. And you have to put the pieces in the right place. And those damn stacks of tiles sometimes spill out on the table. Small problems on a small game are actually big problems. Of easy solution, however, with a little effort. If you want to see what it’s like to play a little game in less than 30 seconds, you’re welcome.
Now i could tell you that these are the 5 games that have given us the most satisfaction when designing a setupper. Well, actually, these are the five games that we often play and that our setuppers have got us out of most trouble. None the less, we poured our passion in each of our project. Because when you are fond of board games, rankings are just part of a whole. And we like the whole world of board game.
