The most common shape was that of the cubic die, with six faces numbered from one to six. The true boom of modern games, which gave a new meaning to the role of dice, occurred from the 1970s onwards when Dungeons and Dragons, created by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson, came onto the scene. This role-playing game, based on a complex rules system, introduced the use of dice as a means to determine the outcome of players’ actions. From rolls to hit to rolls for damage, dice became an interface between the player and the imaginary world created by the game.
Dungeons and Dragons paved the way for a new generation of games that use dice in innovative ways. Today, there are numerous modern board games, such as Settlers of Catan, Pandemic, Warhammer, and many others, that rely on a dice-rolling system to determine the outcomes of players’ actions.
