There is only one place where we can understand the state of health of the gaming world every year. It is located where once the locomotive of Europe produced millions of tons of steel, thanks to the inexhaustible quantity of coal that was mined in that area.
No, this is not the introduction of yet another review of Brass: Birmingham. Today we’re talking about the mecca of the board game, the destination of every self-respecting enthusiast: let’s talk about Spiel Essen!
We at The Dicetroyers could not fail to be present at this event which, every year, contains in its pavilions all the news from the major (and non-major) boardgame publishers.
This year the fair closed with a record number of 193,000 entries, thus confirming its record in events related to board games.
In our opinion, this year the Spiel deserved this great partecipation: 6 pavilions full of games brightened the days of the lucky visitors, crowded everywhere to enjoy everything it had to offer.
The first time we were at Spiel it was a unique experience: coming out of the escalators of the metro, in front of the gigantic Messe Essen building, we felt like little ants in front of the definitive nest of the game. Once inside, however, we immediately felt at home in a universe of colors, boxes, meeples and tokens.
Even today, after years, we can’t feel satisfied yet: wandering around the thousands of stands inside the fair we felt like we were in a huge “toy” library, one where you can’t help but find what you’re looking for.
We immediately tried Nucleum, by Board And Dice, and we really started with a bang: a masterpiece like few others, with unique difficulties and satisfactions. We then moved on to Evacuation, by Delicious Games, another gaming gem. Then we went to our friends at CGE to try Kutna Hora: The City of Silver and among mines and Bohemian patricians we immersed ourselves in their playful Middle Ages. We couldn’t miss the Ludus Magnus stand, where Marco, their poet, welcomed us with open arms by introducing us to Haunted Lands, explained by the tutorial master Vincenzo, the Puzzillo of the South.
At the Thundergryph booth we met Flavio, the Meeple in the shirt, who showed us Darwin’s Journey. If you haven’t figured it out yet, we are madly in love with Simone Luciani‘s games. And at the Pendragon stand Mauro Chiabotto showed us the prototype of their next game (no spoilers!). Those wizards from the Little Rocket family game offered us candy and a few rounds of Coney, Hens and One Card Dungeon.
Describing the rest of our tabletop journey into the world of Spiel would take us a few days… However, what is certain is that those days will remain in our board of memories, like every year when this event has been hosted.
If you are as passionate as us, you can’t miss it. For no reason.
