If you thought heroes with lightsabers and twenty-sided dice were just movie stuff, get ready to think again: every year in Indianapolis, Gen Con takes place—the ultimate gathering of all self-respecting nerds. Born way back in 1968 thanks to a guy named Gary Gygax—who, spoiler alert, basically invented Dungeons & Dragons—this event has become the Mecca for anyone who’s ever dreamed of turning into an elf, a wizard, or just someone who rolls dice like there’s no tomorrow.
Gen Con isn’t just a fair: it’s a massive battlefield made up of tables, cards, miniatures, and people competing to see who can be the most obsessed with a role-playing game or a collectible card deck. Here you can find tournaments that last longer than a marathon, booths with new games that probably will never see the light of day in stores, and passionate cosplayers who make Comic-Con look like a kids’ party.
But don’t think it’s only for “geeks”: Gen Con is the perfect place to see grown-ups animatedly discussing “territory control strategies” while rolling dice that tumble with the uncertainty of a coffee cup on a table. Some dress as warriors, some as witches, and some probably just forgot to change out of their pajamas—because yes, for four days, you live in a parallel world where the rules of reality are suspended and imagination reigns supreme.
And it’s not all fun and games: there are also panels about game design, inclusivity in gaming (yes, even nerds keep up with the times!), and how to survive a Dungeons & Dragons campaign without going crazy (spoiler: you don’t always succeed). Oh, and of course, there’s charity too—because even dragons have a heart of gold.
