These days, board game creators have come up with just about everything: from managing Bus lines to treating psychiatric patients in Unconscious Mind, from Viking battles in Blood Rage to making quilts in Patchwork… In short, there’s something for everyone.
What has surprised me the most in recent years, however, is the rise of titles that have little to do with the classic nerd world. Let’s be honest: when we think of board game enthusiasts, we expect to see spaceships, murderous orcs, or at best, cat tokens or Pokémon.
And yet, while walking through conventions and seeing football fields or Tour de France tracks, and passionate fans clutching miniature bikes or decks of football players, I’ve been genuinely amazed.
Then again, times have changed. There’s no longer any barrier that can stop worker placement, rondels, drafting, or analysis paralysis. With the rallying cry Nerds of the world, unite!, we’re taking over everything—yes, even the world of sports!
And that’s how wonderful gaming gems like Flamme Rouge or Eleven are born—because anything can be put on the table and still be fun. Be it cyclists, footballers, or American football players (perhaps a bit odd, like in Blood Bowl), we’ll manage them all in the best way possible and, thanks to them, score more points and win.
Of course, it takes more than just four rules and a couple of pawns on a track to make a beloved board game: you need solid mechanics, an irresistible theme, but above all—a story. And what better story than retro car racing, where, behind goggles and helmets, motor legends battle for first place on dusty tracks, come rain or shine?
HEAT: Pedal to the Metal brings back the good old days of races fueled by courage and crazy accelerations. At the wheel of our racing car, we obviously aim for first place, but not without challenges: slipstreams, sharp turns, rain, tunnels, overtakes, and spinouts. We’ll be aided by trusty mechanics and sponsors, but most importantly… our instinct (our strategic instinct, of course!).
Not content with just the base game’s success, Days of Wonder also released two expansions: Heavy Rain and Tunnel Vision, which add new tracks and fresh energy to an already rich game.
And here at The Dicetroyers, we couldn’t resist rolling out an organizer for this gaming gem: introducing our All-In Insert for HEAT: Pedal to the Metal, designed to keep the base game and expansions neatly stored in a single box. Yes—even with all the boards, flush closure, and sleeved cards.
Because to hit the gas, you first need to be organized. Step on it—we’ll take care of the rest!
