Once again, Lucca Comics & Games has proven that the true beating heart of the festival lies in the Carducci Pavilion, where among dice, cards, and crowded gaming tables, the celebration of board games comes to life. While outside the streets of Lucca fill with cosplayers and comic artists, inside the pavilion you can smell fresh cardboard and strategy in the air, surrounded by enthusiasts repeating the fair’s most common phrase: “Just one more game, then I’ll go.”

The year 2025 brings a flood of new releases and, as always, the eagerly awaited “Board Game of the Year” award, now considered the Oscar of the industry. This year’s five finalists are Botanicus, a zen title for those who dream of the perfect garden without needing a green thumb; Cities, where building the ideal city is easier than getting a construction permit in real life; Terrorscape, a competitive horror game where escape becomes an art form; Mesos, which turns mythology into a divine chessboard; and The Golden River, a river adventure where you’re more likely to drown in dice than in the rapids.

Five very different games, united by one thing: their uncanny ability to make even the best of friends argue—a sure sign that passion is alive and well.

Among the booths, new releases compete for visitors’ attention like candy at a carnival. Asmodee celebrates thirty years of success with a special Dixit card illustrated by Marie Cardouat, a collector’s holy grail. Cranio Creations bets on brains (and time) with Echoes of Time, a sci-fi management game, and Ants, where the ants are more organized than most work meetings. Ghenos Games and DV Games present an arsenal of novelties, including Potion Explosion Collector’s Edition, Magic Maze Pocket, and Strapp Art, while Pendragon Game Studio rides the fantasy wave with a reprint of The Witcher: Old World and the brand-new expansion Wild Hunt.

Wandering among the booths, the feeling remains the same: board gaming is not just a pastime, but an art form that bridges generations and brings strangers together. You sit down, roll dice, bluff, laugh, accuse each other of cheating, and in the end, shake hands. That’s what Lucca is all about—a great shared table where imagination always wins, even when you lose.
