That our minds need peace is absolutely undeniable. That such peace might come from a board game, perhaps a bit less so.

We, the lovers of hefty games, have never lacked a touch of healthy madness: a board game night after a long day of studying or trying not to lose our minds at work is our catharsis, which comes—paradoxically enough—through an extra squeeze of our neurons, as if our brains were lemons with infinite juice.

The ways of the psyche are complex, contradictory, mysterious. But that a publisher would take on the epic challenge of curing phobias or anxiety through meeples and tokens? Unheard of.

Well, until Unconscious Mind was released, of course.

In the shoes of suck-… um, devoted followers of the great master Freud, our task will be to explore the most complex minds, bringing to light from the depths of the subconscious everything that troubles our unconscious… patients. To do this, we’ll need insights, libraries, books, but most of all, coffee—the most important resource on the table, naturally.

In a medium-heavy eurogame with an endless setup, we’ll enjoy wringing out our brains to score the most points and earn the title of the suck-… er, best protégé of the cigar-smoking master, amidst Oedipus complexes and PTSD.

The mechanics are a finely tuned blend of action selection and optimization, with the Wheel of Insights playing a central role in patient catharsis and healing—featuring the inevitable Rorschach inkblots to “clean up,” like we’re in Watchmen or something.

Did I mention an endless setup? Oh yes. Between small, medium, and large decks of cards, tokens everywhere, little candies for the Insight Wheels, and meeples scattered around, a whopping four pages of the rulebook are dedicated just to properly setting up our session.

We at The Dicetroyers are obsessively and compulsively faithful to the Freudian order: everything must be perfectly organized in the shortest time possible. So what better game to satisfy our OCD than this one? Our organizer for Unconscious Mind holds not only the base game, but also the Nightmares and Free Association expansions, safely stored in the base game box, with trays and slots for every one of the game’s countless components—even in the Deluxe edition.

So if you want to lose your mind, do it while playing—not while setting up!
